Going along Nykolaishen Drive in Kamsack one cannot help but notice and appreciate the Trackside Garden which is now producing its peak summer show.
“We get so many compliments from people passing through town, or walking their dogs or having lunch,” said Audrey Horkoff, who is one of about a dozen volunteers who spends time each Tuesday morning tending to the garden.
“It’s coming along nicely,” she said. “And it is well utilized.
“We’re very happy with the perennials this year,” she said. But, because the area needed rain, the annuals were slow. They’re coming along now.
But generally everything is early this year, about two weeks earlier than normal, she said. For example the lilies are in full bloom this week.
The volunteers who tend the garden have only one fundraiser each year which provides the money for the purchase of plants and other gardening products including crushed rock when needed.
That fundraiser is the annual Strawberry Social which this year will be held the afternoon of July 27.
“The funds raised at the social allow us to do the work in the garden,” Horkoff said.
At the event, being held at the renovated CN caboose located alongside the garden, strawberries and shortcake with ice cream and refreshments will be served.
Kamsack’s Polka Pals have agreed to provide the entertainment, she said.
