SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department is designating the second Sunday of September each year to honour their comrades who risk their lives every day and to those who have fallen in the line of duty.
SFD Fire Chief Morgan Hackl said all firefighters’ lives are always at risk on the line of service every day. National Memorial Day will be on Sunday, Sept. 12.
“On Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, SFD joins cities and fire departments across the country to honour and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to commemorate their courage and unwavering dedication to serving our communities,” said Hackl.
The SFD will observe a moment of silence at 10 a.m. on Sunday and firefighters will line up on the ramps of their fire stations while all flags will be flown half-mast for Memorial Day.
The event is similar to the annual 9/11 commemoration in the United States that honours and remembers the heroic efforts of all first responders during the World Trade Center Twin Towers terror attacks.
