SASKATOON — Saskatchewan's first major lottery win of 2022 is a big one.
Dustin Kiefer was about to go into his Monday morning meeting when he saw that someone from Saskatoon won $50 million on the Jan. 7 LOTTO MAX draw.
He checked his ticket, discovered he was the big winner, and then sat through the longest meeting of his life.
“I’m going to be honest, I didn’t hear anything that was said during the meeting,” he laughed while claiming his prize later that day. “Not one thing!”
Kiefer said he called his wife after his meeting to share the good news.
“We were both completely shocked,” he said. “We still are – I still cannot believe it!”
The new winner said he hasn’t put much thought into what he will do with his massive windfall, but did mention one purchase he wouldn’t mind making soon.
“When I told my dad about it, I said, ‘I’m going to buy an espresso maker,’” he said. “It just popped to mind."
“Eventually we would like to do some travelling,” he continued. “We were supposed to go to Italy a couple years ago, but then COVID hit... It’ll be nice to get there one day.”
Kiefer said his main hope after winning $50 million is to be smart with his money.
“It all feels so surreal,” he said. “I feel like I have to be responsible with this money. And I plan to be very responsible with it!”
Kiefer purchased his winning ticket from the Saskatoon Co-op Gas Bar located at 922 51st St. E in Saskatoon. His winning numbers were 4, 5, 31, 39, 42, 45 and 50.
Saskatoon has been no stranger to big lottery wins over the last few months. In October of last year, a resident took home a staggering $55 million LOTTO MAX prize. Just over month later, two other locals claimed $2 million WESTERN 649 and a $1 million LOTTO 6/49 prizes, respectively.
