SASKATOON — Saskatoon Fire Department crews were called to help gain access to a person in Sutherland Dog Park on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Ambulance service personnel called SFD dispatch to help with a low-angle rescue in the river embankment of the Beef Research Road (grid road).
One fire engine was dispatched to assist the ambulance service. SFD fire crews, on arrival, used bolt cutters to gain access to the fenced-off area.
They located the female patient, who had been out for a walk on the trails on the lower footpath along the river. She suffered a severe ankle injury.
Fire crews determined a rescue unit was required for additional help and SFD dispatch sent the closest rescue team to assist in extricating the female.
SFD’s rescue unit used a haul system to go down the embankment allowing them and engine crews to work together in wrapping and carrying the patient up.
Despite the challenging icy conditions, SFD’s crew and the patient safely got out. The patient was transferred to the care of the ambulance service.
