Province reports first northern COVID-19 death, 23 new cases, 223 active cases in northern region

For the first time since the disease surfaced, a northern Manitoba resident has died from COVID-19.

The person, listed as a female in her 40s from the Island Lake district within the Northern Health Region (NHR), was one of five people announced by provincial health officials to have died Nov. 6. The home community of the woman was not listed by the province in an official media briefing, but the location is visible on the provincial COVID-19 dashboard.

Along with the northern woman, a woman in her 60s from the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority and two men and a woman in their 90s from Winnipeg - each tied to existing outbreaks at care homes and Victoria General Hospital - have also died. Manitoba has now reported 96 deaths from the disease.

Manitoba reported 242 new net cases Friday, bringing the province's total case numbers up to 7,419. Throughout Manitoba, 4,286 people currently have COVID-19 - 161 of those people are in hospital with the disease, with 20 of those people in intensive care.

Out of the new cases, 23 cases were reported in the NHR. The region's active case count is 223, with the The Pas/OCN/Kelsey district leading the way with active cases. In that district, 94 people currently have COVID-19. Cross Lake/Pimicikamak district has 59 active cases, with 23 cases listed as "unknown district" and 19 cases in the Thompson/Mystery Lake district.

The Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry Portage/Sherridon district continues to have one active case and three recoveries.
