SASKATOON — Métis Nation-Saskatchewan presented 25 citizens in the city with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal during a brief ceremony on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Top of the Inn Sheraton Cavalier Hotel.
Monday’s commemorative medal ceremony was the first of three organized by MN-S as they honour the significant contributions made by their citizens in various fields like arts, culture, healthcare, education, sports, business and agriculture.
MN-S is honouring more than 100 of their citizens as they also held a separate ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the EA Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert. The last presentation will be at the Government House in Regina on Wednesday, March 1.
The commemorative medal is part of the 70th-anniversary celebration of the ascension to the throne by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who served as the longest-reigning monarch of the Commonwealth.
The first commemorative medal given to a Canadian was during the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. Commemorative medals are awarded during important years like coronation, jubilee and anniversary of the Confederation.
Delmer Anderson, Allen Augier, Michael Bell, Barbara Card, Angela Caron, Barry Falcon, Curtis Fiss, Norman Fleury, Victor Guillet, Penny Hurton, Jacqueline Kennedy, Percy Kenny, brothers Dwight and Dwayne King, Glenn LaFleur, Verna McCallum, Adam McInnes, Ernest McPherson, Robert Merasty, Mike Natomagan, Chance Parenteau, Louise Pederson, Richard Pilon, Melanie Pritchett and Becky Trotchie were the recipients.
Elder Norman Fleury failed to attend the event with his medal received by his daughter Chantelle and son Mark.
