Nominations open for province's highest honour and outstanding volunteers

Nomination deadlines are fast approaching for both the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and the Volunteer Medal.

Nomination deadlines are fast approaching for both the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and the Volunteer Medal.

Individuals have until October 18 to recommend nominees for the next round of Saskatchewan Volunteer Medals and until November 1 to put forward names for the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

鈥淚n my travels across the province, I meet so many gifted, capable, and generous people,鈥 Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield said. 鈥淭he Saskatchewan Order of Merit and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal provide opportunities to celebrate these remarkable individuals, who have such an enormous impact in our province and beyond our borders. I encourage everyone to consider nominating a deserving person for these prestigious provincial honours.鈥

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was established in 1985. It recognizes excellence, achievement and contributions to the social, cultural and economic well-being of the province.

To date, 209 people have received it. The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was established in 1995 and 174 people have received it to date. The medal recognizes those who reach outside of their personal activities to help others and make Saskatchewan daily life better for everyone.

A Saskatchewan Order of Merit or Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal nominee may be any current or former long-term resident of the province and a Canadian citizen. Groups and organizations are ineligible to be nominated to the Order or for the Volunteer Medal, along with sitting members of Parliament, the Legislature or the judiciary.

Nominations are not accepted posthumously for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, but are for the Saskatchewan Order of Merit within one year of the date of passing.

Selected recipients will be invested to the Order and receive the Volunteer Medal at two separate ceremonies with the Lieutenant Governor in Regina in the late spring of 2016.
