A new program designed to get young children and their parents active began in Kamsack on Friday.

Called Let’s Get Moving, the program is an initiative of the Town of Kamsack, Victoria School and the Kamsack Family Resource Centre. It is being held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Victoria School gymnasium on occasional Fridays.

The purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers up to five years of age to interact with their parents or guardians in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment, said Andrea Verigin, the co-ordinator at the Kamsack Family Resource Centre.

This program is a great way for parents and guardians in the community to meet, she said, explaining that although she will be setting it up and getting it going, it will be the parents who will be most active with interactions with their young children.

Verigin advises parents to use the program as a link to other community activities and resources and said it provides games and activities featuring physical activity, recreation, play, literacy and art.

Activities will be varied each week, but the program follows the same structure, she said. There is no cost to participate.

The program, being held December 4, January 8 and 15 and February 5 and 12, runs on a structured basis, including free play, circle time, structured play, snack time and “good-byes.â€

“This is a great opportunity for you to play with your child in an open gym.â€

Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their own children, she said. “Please use this program to spend quality, special time with the little ones in your life.â€

The Boys and Girls Club of Yorkton has been conducting this program for a while, she said.
