Man who tried to slip into U.S. to avoid murder charge appears in court

Afrah Ali was brought back to Saskatoon in July 2021 after he was arrested in January 2021 attempting to cross into the U.S.

SASKATOON – A preliminary hearing is wrapping up for a man who allegedly attempted to flee to the United States to avoid a murder charge.

Afrah Ali’s preliminary hearing ran on April 4 and April 5. It was then adjourned and continued on July 19, 20, and 21. The hearing is scheduled to start back up on Sept. 14 for arguments. The details of what is said during preliminary hearings can’t be published.

Ali, 34, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Logan Nayneecassum at a now-closed pub/restaurant on Slimmon Road in Saskatoon.

According to police, they were called to the pub at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2020, for a report of an injured man. When first responders arrived they found Nayneecassum suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Three days later police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Ali saying he was known to have associations to Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa.

Almost a year later, Ali was brought back to Saskatoon after he was caught attempting to cross into the U.S. in January 2021.

The charge against Ali hasn’t been proven in court.
