Leaking package in Saskatoon proves to be non-hazardous material

The HAZMAT unit responded to an emergency.

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department deployed its HAZMAT team and decontamination unit after receiving a call of an unknown substance leaking in a package found in the 100 block of Avenue H Â鶹´«Ã½AV. 

SFD dispatch received the call on Friday, Dec. 9. Also, it dispatched one fire engine and the Battalion Chief to assist the HAZMAT and decontamination units in disposing of the reported package. 

The call was made at 9:51 a.m. The first arriving crew reported that persons near or exposed to the package were not experiencing signs or symptoms considered abnormal. 

They isolated the package, and the HAZMAT team entered the building, where the box was no longer leaking. 

They identified the liquid as a non-hazardous material, and SFD did not disclose other details of the incident.
