Largest pumpkin at Preeceville contest tops the scale at 205 pounds

Vegetable contest brings the biggest out to be weighed and measured in annual Vegetable contest in Preeceville.,

PREECEVILLE — The largest pumpkin and winner of the annual Preeceville Great Pumpkin Contest tipped the scale at 205 pounds.

The pumpkin was entered by Dennis Wales. The contest was held at the Preeceville Main Street parking lot on Sept. 23 and was sponsored by the Town of Preeceville Economical Development Committee. The contest featured entries in the pumpkin, potato, cabbage, zucchini, onion, carrot, turnip, beet and kids’ categories.

All entries had to be grown in a garden and must have been show ready with the tops cut off. First place entries in most contests won $50, and $25 was awarded for second place. Entries in the kids’ category received $10 and the pumpkin entries won $75 for first place and $50 for second.

Angela Scheller and Maureen Johnson had the task of weighing and measuring all vegetables except the larger vegetables, which were weighed on a beam scale by Florian Balawyder.

Produce brought in for display included grapes, watermelon and sunflower heads.

In the pumpkin contest, second place went to Blaise Beatty for his entry that weighed 143 pounds. There were a total of five entries in the pumpkin contest with other entries provided by Wyatt and Carter Scheller, 101 pounds; Tom Babchishin, 96 pounds, and Xavier Lizotte, 25 pounds.

In the carrot category, Eileen Prestie won first place for her carrot that weighed 1.97 pounds and Wyatt Scheller took second for his carrot that weighed, 1.79 pounds. The other entries included: Addie Hull, Joe Yacyshyn, Anita Fairbanks, Susan Serhan, and Dale and Elizabeth Prestie.

In the onion category, Joe Yacyshyn won first place for his entry that weighed 2.78 pounds and second place went to Dennis Wales for his entry that weighed 1.14 pounds. Other entries were: Anita Fairbanks, Harvey Wolkowski, Norm Parkin, Susan Serhan, Jon Beatty and Donna Beatty.

In the kid’s category, Rayna Blotski was the only entry.

In the beets category, first prize was awarded to Rose Rahn for her entry that weighed 7.12 pounds. Second place went to Eileen Prestie for her entry that weighed 5.15 pounds. Other entries were: Addie Hull, Angela Scheller, Lorna Plaxin, Julius and Maria Fehr, Anta Fairbanks, Heather Gawrelitza and Susan Serhan.

In the zucchini category, Susan Serhan won first place for her entry that weighed 14.3 pounds and second place went to Marg Bowey for her entry that weighed, 9.95 pounds. Donna Beatty, brought in the only other entry.

In the turnip category, Susan Serhan won first for her entry, 2.7 pounds and Wyatt Scheller earned second place, 1.2 pounds.

In the potato category, Joe Yacyshyn won first place, 4.6 pounds and Eileen  Prestie took second place, 3.67 pounds. Other entries were submitted by Mary Pasiechnik, Susan Serhan and Donna Beatty.

In the cabbage category, Susan Serhan placed first for her entry weighing 26.4 pounds and Violet Head placed second for her entry, 20.4 pounds. Other entries were brought in by Donna Beatty, Eileen Prestie, Elizabeth Prestie and Joanne Petrowski.
