Saskatoon residents are advised to be cautious of ice conditions in recreational ponds and the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan River as the weather begins to warm up, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.
Recent ice testing conducted by SFD has determined that the thickness is no longer suitable for winter recreational use. The minimum ice thickness required for safe recreational activities is at least eight inches.
To alert residents, fire crews will put up "No Skating" signs at each recreational storm pond. Community members who use these ponds for recreational purposes are responsible for assuming all risks and maintenance responsibilities, including removing personal belongings and ensuring user safety.
Moreover, the SFD warns that the ice on the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan River has also started to melt. Since the ice that covers this body of water is unpredictable, it is never safe for winter recreational use. Residents are advised to stay on the ice that covers sections of the river.
Community members are reminded to be careful when near any large body of water. Keeping a close eye on children and pets while visiting trails, parks, or off-leash areas adjacent to the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan River or a stormwater retention pond is essential.
