SASKATOON — The Federation of Indigenous Nations and the Saskatoon Industry Education Council signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct various Science, Technology, Engineering and Math outreach activities for the province’s First Nation students.
The MOU awaits the signing of both parties and the collaboration is set for a period of five years or depending on the funding provided by SIEC’s SaskCode program, whichever comes first.
SIEC’s SaskCode program aims to train teachers with the proper training, technological skills, and physical tools that they can use to introduce computational thinking and coding in their respective classes.
They will learn engaging and age-appropriate activities that are related to the Saskatchewan curricula. Robotics will also be used in learning activities that students love to learn.
FSIN Vice Chief Morley Watson said STEM is the only program that is run by the FSIN Education and Training Secretariat. “[The program] engages in STEM Outreach to students and teachers at First Nations schools in Saskatchewan.”
“The FSIN’s Education and Training Secretariat’s mandate is to advocate for and protect the implementation of the Inherent and Treaty Right to Education. We want to ensure access to quality programs that respond to the ever-changing needs of the world in which we live and the on-going regional development of the First Nations education.”
