While being inadvertently called to one fire west of Cote Siding last week, the Kamsack fire brigade saw smoke a distance away and responded to that fire.
At about 4:15 p.m. on May 28, the brigade was told of a fire believed to be burning along the CN railway tracks east of Cote Siding, Ken Thompson, fire chief, said last week.
鈥淲e got there, but there was no fire,鈥� Thompson said. 鈥淏ut while there, we saw heavy smoke in an area southwest of Cote. As we went towards it, a call came to us informing of the fire which was burning west of the Assiniboine River.鈥�
Thompson said that the crew fought the field-pasture fire for about four hours.
Considering how dry it is this spring, Thompson said he is surprised that the brigade has not been called to as many fires as one would expect.
Fire Kamsack fire fighters were to go to Churchbridge May 31 and June 1 to attend a grain entrapment rescue course, he said.
Thompson was eager to remind residents that members of the brigade, dressed in full gear, will be playing a return match against members of the Kamsack soccer club at the Victoria School grounds at 6 p.m. on June 7.
The game will serve as a practice for the firefighters as they will be functioning under stress of full gear while playing the game, he said.
