While they were here, they attended the McAlpine Family Reunion hosted by John & Rhonda ( McAlpine) Haubrich at Braeside Farm with some time also spent at the Memorial Hall in Dubuc. The reunion included golf, dance, meals (some catered) and Highland Games. After everyone left, the hostess was heard to comment, "The end of the reunion is like taking down the Christmas Tree - the house seems bare and too quiet..."
Elsie Zimmer of Regina and Vivian Talbot recently visited with their Aunt Effie Skene who is a resident of the Broadview Centennial Lodge to help her celebrate her birthday.
Sheldon and Dorothy Herron of Winnipeg called at the village office on Wednesday enroute home from the 100th anniversary celebrations being held in Bredenbury. His mom, Arna Herron, was a sister of Lena Freed's and moved from Bredenbury to Dubuc with her family many years ago. They lived on the NW corner of town where Ellis's lived, just north of the present Clark home. Joan Kerr, town administrator, gave them directions to McAlpines. Melba and Sheldon were classmates back in elementary school and thoroughly enjoyed reminising about those good old days.
Jim Talbot was a Regina visitor again last week for another medical procedure. Hope you are feeling better as a result, Jim!
Last week we mentioned that 105 year old Lydia Zimmer celebrated her birthday. She was not born in Bangor. She was born in the USA and came to Yorkton with her family as a young child. She attended school, worked in Yorkton and spent her retired years there until moving to the Bangor Lodge this spring. One of the places she used to work for many years was the Crescent Creamery.
Many from the community attended a memorial service held at the Dubuc Memorial Hall on Aug. 10 for Edith Isabelle Simle (nee Closson), who passed away peacefully on July 21 at the age of 95. Edith was born on Jan. 15, 1918 on the Closson Homestead in the Freedhome district, the tenth child in a family of thirteen children. She is survived by one brother, Arthur Closson, of Saskatoon; two sisters-in-law, Karin Closson of Stockholm, and Gladys Simle of Esterhazy; three children, Shelagh Garren of Vancouver, B.C., Rodney Johnson of Hay River, NWT, and Murray Simle (Jocelyn) of Dubuc; Four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nephews and nieces. Edith was laid to rest beside her late husband, Kenneth Simle, in the Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery south of Dubuc. Sympathy of the Dubuc community and surrounding area is extended to all her Simle and Closson family members.
Alan and Betty Willway hosted their granddaughter, Vanessa Peterson, of Regina and an exchange student from Gunma, Japan, Etsuko Oguma, for a weekend visit. Vanessa is involved in an exchange with Japan that involves 25 students. Etsuko was one of the mentors and was hosted by Vanessa. Within the next year, Vanessa will be visiting Japan as a part of a reciprocating exchange of Canadians. The Willways enjoyed meeting Etsuko and learning more about life across the ocean.
Adele Forsberg, Johnny's daughter, from Hamilton, ON flew to Alberta to visit with her Aunt Anna (Forsberg) and Uncle Francis Wahid, who reside in Red Deer. They all then motored together to Saskatchewan to visit with relatives and friends. They visited with Mary Forsberg at the Prairie Manor and enjoyed having several supper meals with her while catching up on family news. They left Tuesday to return home via Saskatoon where they will spend a few days with Sandra Forsberg.
Word has been received of the passing of Grant Weir on Aug. 5, 2013 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Abday), of 62 years, 4 sons, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 Sisters, Hazel (Albert Kovacs) of Esterhazy, and Isabell, 1 brother, Harvey (Blanche) Weir. He was born on Aug. 9, 1927 on the farm near Dubuc and was the sixth child of nine children. He was laid to rest on his 86th birthday, Aug. 9, 2013 at Riverside Memorial Park in Regina. Sympathy is extended to all his family members.
