Pink Bootie congratulations go out to Grandma and Grandpa, Jeri-Lou (Smith) and Greg McKelvie, of Prince Albert, on the birth of a granddaughter, Eleanore Grace. She was born on Feb. 23 to their eldest daughter, Kate (McKelvie) and Casey Loseth. Eleanore was also welcomed by her excited big brother, Sammy, and Aunt Bethany McKelvie.
Jim Talbot and Mary Forsberg attended the February birthday party at the Esterhazy Centennial Care Home. They were accompanied by Jim's mom, Judy, from Sumner Place in Esterhazy. Jim's Dad, John Talbot, turned 90 years old on Feb. 27 so they all helped him celebrate that day. They visited briefly with Edith Simle and Lorne Ellwood who are also former Dubuc residents in the Care Home.
The February community birthday party was held on the fourth Wednesday again this month. Good fellowship and a delicious lunch were shared by all those present, even though there was no one in attendance with a February birthday.
Word has arrived in the community of the passing of a former Dubuc school teacher, Lillian (Heuser) Mitchell, on Feb. 26, 2013 at the age of 91 as the result of a severe stroke. Lillian taught in several schools until she made her home in Grenfell in 1949. Here she met Jack Mitchell, they were married in 1962 and spent their married life in the community. Lillian came to Dubuc to take a temporary teaching position from April - June 1958, at the same time as one of her sisters, Gwen and Rev. Stewart Dingwall and their family were living in Dubuc ministering in the Dubuc-Waldron Pastoral Charge with the United Church. Both Gwen and Stew have predeceased Lillian. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 2000. Funeral services were held on March 8 at Grace Westminster United Church in Saskatoon with Rev. Daryl Woods officiating. There was also a memorial service at the Grenfell United Church on March 16 with interment of cremated remains to take place at a later date. Sympathy is extended to all of Lillian's siblings, nieces, nephews, friends and former students.
Jim and Vivian Talbot were Regina visitors March 1 where Jim kept a medical appointment at the Pasqua Hospital. Vivian was able to step in and have a visit with her cousin, Laurein Johnson, while waiting for Jim. They started out for home about six o'clock but road and weather conditions were not good so they turned around and spent the night in the city and returned Saturday afternoon when weather and road conditions were much improved. The weather has been causing travellers a lot of grief lately. Pay heed to the travel advisories and stay safe, everyone!
Congratulations to very proud grandparents, Wayne and Joan Kerr! Jasmine and Jade Kerr are members of the Esterhazy High School Senior Girls curling team that won gold medals in the Provincial Competition March 2-3 in Carrot River. Their parents, Charlene Scharnatta-Kerr and Trevor Kerr, are the team coaches. Joan has been following the girls and made the trip to Carrot River to cheer them on.
It must be spring!! Snowbirds have been spotted returning to their nests!! Don/Glenda Bell and Joe/Leona Kaczur have returned last Thursday after six weeks and over 4500 miles of travelling to warmer climate south of the border. Audrey/Peter Nielsen also returned home Sunday evening from a 2 month winter vacation in Arizona.
A big thank-you goes out to Margaret Ellwood who has been looking after the Hut, opening up and making coffee for coffee row. Maureen Toth also helped Margaret with the potluck and birthday get-togethers, which kept things running smoothly in the absence of the regular convenors while they were on their get-away from this cold winter wonderland.
Sympathy of the Dubuc community goes out to Arrick Hawes on the passing of his maternal grandmother, Mary Berger, at the Langenburg Care home. Condolences are also extended to his parents, Lynn and Garry Hawes of Bangor and his brothers, Nathan & Kris.
Get well wishes from everyone here are sent to Lydia Zimmer of The Bentley in Yorkton. Lydia is 104 years of age and is recuperating from a fall. Earle Moller is Lydia's nephew.
Coffee row has been a busy place of late. On Sat., Ron McAlpine treated everyone on the occasion of his 88th birthday. Guests were John and Rhonda McAlpine-Haubrick and children, Shirelle and Marty; Michelle and Dion Nagy who were home from Lethbridge, AB to help Dad celebrate and attend Marty's skate carnival; and also, Darlene and Stuart Stevenson of Stockholm . Tuesday morning, Nina Moller took her turn at buying coffee and bringing sweets for her upcoming birthday on the 14th. Fifteen people attended that morning including guests Beverley (Clauson) Kulcsar of Yorkton and Jean Allan from Maple Ridge, BC who returned "home" to have a visit with everyone. Jean also visited with her brothers, Rick Allan and Kenny Allan, and her niece, Sienna (Legacy) and Cameron Petruka, of Yorkton, during the week-long stay with the Kulcsars.
The March community pot-luck supper was held on Wednesday with about 20 people in attendance. The hut was decorated in green and with shamrocks for St Pat's Day. Door Prize winner was Mary Forsberg and the lucky 50/50 winner was Bun Flick. An out of town guest was Tammy Clark Nuygen of Cochrane, AB who is currently visiting with her mom, Sharon Clark.
