STURGIS — Sophia Storoschuk, 7, of Sturgis started out in life dealing with many difficult health issues that had her spending 72 days in the NICU in Regina as a newborn infant. She had to have seven surgeries to correct digestive system issues, as well as spinal and arm issues. She is the daughter of Bryan Storoschuk and Erin Trowell.
Recently she hit a major milestone of completing all major prescribed surgeries. “So we wanted to celebrate this in a big way and what better than giving back to a cause that means so much to us,” said mom Erin.
“After Sophia spent 72 days in NICU, a place where specialized equipment and care is so crucial to helping these little babies be able to come home, it is our way of giving back and being able to pay it forward means so much to us.”
For every day she spent in the specialized care, Sophia completed a skating lap at the rink to raise money and make a donation to the Z99 radiothon on March 21 in Regina. No donation amount was available at press time.
“Sophia did the laps through numerous visits to the Sturgis Skating Arena which had her attending pubic skate and figure skating lessons. She proudly concluded her laps during the Sturgis Figure Skating Ice Carnival on March 9. It was a very special moment when she was joined by Mollie Jaeb, who herself was a patient at a NICU unit in Edmonton for 50 days when she was a child,” said Trowell.
