Jayelle Rostotski was selected to wear a traditional dress from Thailand on Friday at Connecting Canora鈥檚 Colours. Helping to dress her and add the accessories for a photograph was Vlaiwan Busaba Knox, who prefers to go by the nickname 鈥淭uk.鈥 The dress that she is wearing is called a Thai Chakkri and it is worn for weddings, betrothal ceremonies and various other formal occassions.

Connecting Canora鈥檚 Colours was success, in spite of expecting more guests, said Chelsey Exner, Canora鈥檚 director of leisure services.

It is a major step up from last year, when the culture had to be cancelled because not enough exhibitors would commit, she said.

It is difficult to estimate how many people went through the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre for the one-day cultural event, Exner said. One way obtaining a base figure is to look to the Filipino booth, which prepared enough food for 100 plates. Before the day was over they were out of food.

The students from Canora Junior Elementary and Canora Composite schools added much to the program and kept the booths busy, Exner said. The leisure services committee asked all the exhibitors to fill out a questionnaire so their ideas can be incorporated into next year鈥檚 program, whe said. However, it will be a few months before formal discussions begin for the culture day Connecting Canora鈥檚 Colours.鈥

Performers on stage during the day were: the Whitesand Band, the Rhythm Masters, a cultures鈥 fashion show, the Park Swingers. Admyred Yoga Studio, and there was entertainment from the Philippines.

The presenters included: Admyred Yoga, A Common Thread, the Buchanan Arts Group, England by Candace Doogan, the Park Swingers, a Philippes display by a group of Filipinos headed by Melinda Sevilla, the Rhythm Masters, David and Tuk Knox promoted the culture of Thailand, a Ukrainian display and the Whitesand Band.

Exner thanked the presenters and all those who came to view the displays. The event is presented by Canora Leisure Services, with support from Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District, SaskCulture and Saskatchewan Lotteries.
