The City of Yorkton has a new Public Library Bylaw.

鈥淭he current Public Library Bylaw approved in 1955, established the Public Library but did not provide any directions for a Board. The new Bylaw is being proposed and has been developed using other City of Yorkton Committee Bylaws as a template. This new bylaw provides for the establishment of the 鈥淵orkton Public Library鈥 and provides direction for the Board,鈥 explained Darcy McLeod Community Development, Parks and Recreation with the city.

Certain roles and responsibilities for the Board are prescribed in The Public Libraries Act, 1996, and these have been included in the Bylaw for added clarity. A few key points included in the Bylaw are:

鈥 The Library Board is different from most City Committees in that the Library Board is provided an annual budget for Library programming. Therefore the process for purchasing was provided in the Bylaw and refers to the City of Yorkton Purchasing of Goods & Services and Contract Renewals Policy.

鈥 The Parkland Regional Library is responsible for staffing via the Library Levy, however the Yorkton Public Library Board does provide input on staffing and hours of operation to the Parkland Regional Library.

鈥 The Bylaw establishes a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of nine (9) members to the Library Board.

The bylaw passed unanimously at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.
