The Purina Walk for Dog Guides is celebrating 25 years of raising funds to provide Dog Guides at no cost to Canadians with disabilities. There is a Walk happening in Bredenbury on May 16, 2010 at Lions Den - Kensington Street. The Walk begins at 1:00 p.m. with registrations beginning at 12:00 p.m. There is no registration fee and the event is open to all ages with or without a dog. Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has provided specially trained Dog Guides at no cost to people of all ages from coast to coast. Each Dog Guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train yet they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events and donations from service clubs, corporations, foundations, individuals across the country to continue its success.
The Foundation trains five different types of Dog Guides:Canine Vision Dog Guides - for people who are blind or visually impairedHearing Ear Dog Guides - for people who are deaf or hard of hearingSpecial Skills Dog Guides - for people with a medical or physical disabilitySeizure Response Dog Guides - for people with epilepsyAutism Assistance Dog Guides - for children with autism
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Purina Walk for Dog Guides. The Purina Walk for Dog Guides is a national event that is held in over 200 communities across Canada.
