YORKTON - It’s biking season.
That means it is time for the annual Yorkton RCMP Bike Safety Rodeos.
The first of the rodeos – one will be held at eight elementary schools in the city – was held Monday for Grade 3 students at Columbia School. The event was held in the parking lot at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Cst Kimberly Flett, with the Yorkton RCMP, explained the rodeos are an opportunity for students – 253 across the city -- to practice safe biking skills, adding she had visited each school previously to provide safety tips.
In addition members of the Yorkton Fire Protection Services were on-site giving bicycles a quick safety check – tire pressure, proper seat height and making sure brakes were working properly.
Each participant will receive a brand new bike helmet, at no cost to them, that will be fitted for them at the rodeos, said Flett.
In addition, a bike prize as well as water park and bowling passes would be awarded thanks to sponsors including Hometown Source for Sports; Canadian Tire; Yorkton Fire Protective Services; Yorkton Bowl Arena, and the City.
The program is an initiative of the local RCMP Detachment and is sponsored by SGI and the Yorkton Kinsmen Club of Yorkton; that provided grants and donations to purchase helmets and prizes.
