Students at Yorkton Regional High School were out Friday planting trees to mark Earth Day which was April 22.

Anaswara Reghu鈥怭uthuparambil, vice president of the school鈥檚 student body appeared before the regular meeting of Yorkton Council earlier this spring to detail the plan.

The students plan was to plant 400 seedling trees in amongst forested areas within the city including the Kinsmen Arena, Tennis Courts, Western Development Museum, Ducks Unlimited, and Ravine Ecological.

Reghu鈥怭uthuparambil noted the initiative has been supported by a donation from Pela to purchase the trees.

Pela is the company founded by Jeremy Lang, formerly of Yorkton to create an environmentally friendly cellphone case.聽聽

The tree funding was a new initiative for Pela.

鈥淲e鈥檙e kind of piloting a program ... It鈥檚 something we鈥檙e going to roll out,鈥 Lang, the vice president of sustainability with Pela, told Yorkton This Week.聽聽

Lang said the focus in on the idea of encouraging people to 鈥渄o what you can do鈥 to make a difference, in particular in regards to the environment.

鈥淢ake changes from wherever you are. Physically go out and take that action,鈥 he said, adding the core idea is 鈥渏ust do it.鈥

In addition to Pela鈥檚 contribution, the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association provided 400 trees for the students to plant.
