The upcoming boating season marks the first year that all boaters in Canada, regardless of age, will need to have a boating license.
In order to receive a boating license boaters must pass a 36 question multiple choice exam with a 75% passing grade. Upon passing the exam boaters will receive a temporary card, and a permanent card will be mailed to them within 4-6 weeks. The license is recognized by the Canadian Coast Guard, and is good for life.
A common misconception associated with a boating license is that someone must be 16 years of age to receive a license, and that those over 65 don't require a license. Children from 8-12 years must get a license, and may only operate powerboats with motors under 10 horsepower. Anyone 12-16 must have a license and may only operate boats powered by motors no more than 40 horsepower. Those 16 years and older require a license to operate a powerboat of any kind.
Boaters have two choices in obtaining their boaters license, they can take the exam in person or online. To take the exam in person contact location manager Judy Purdue at the Yorkton branch of the St. John Ambulance. Purdue can be reached at 1-306-783-4544 and is available for appointments from 7:30-4:00, Monday-Friday. Boaters may also take the exam online at www.BoaterExam.com, the exam is open 24/7. The exam takes approximately one hour. To study for the exam a free pamphlet on boating information and safety can be downloaded at www.freecourse.ca, the cost of taking the exam is $30.00.
Boaters who have lost their card can visit www.BoaterExam.com to verify their name is on file and obtain a replacement card before heading out for the season.
