KERROBERT — Her friends refer to her as a farmHer. Leanne Kohlman continues to amaze family and friends with her diversity and multi-tasking. She is a busy mom of four, has a degree from the College of Agriculture and is active on a large farm with her husband. She also operates a U-pick flower garden in the summer, which began in the summer of 2021. According to her friends, she also does a million other things and quilting is one of them.
Kohlman started sewing clothes for her four children when they were young. She wanted to try making a quilt four years ago during the winter months. During that process, Kohlman decided to try to make quilts as grad gifts for everyone in her daughter’s class. Now quilting has become her favorite winter past time.
An average quilt takes Kohlman about two to three weeks of uninterrupted quilting. She says almost all of her quilts have been gifts for family and friends as she believes they are to be used not necessarily displayed or stored.
Although Kohlman has been quilting for only four years, she had enough creations for a gallery showing at the start of COVID, which had to be moved from public viewing to online.
Kohlman was recently a featured artist at Kerrobert Courtroom Gallery, showcasing 25 quilts she has created in what she refers to spare time, and others exclaim is nothing less than an amazing feat in itself.
Tracey Cholin, part of the gallery’s committee, says in a post on the Kerrobert Courtroom Gallery’s Facebook page, “Kohlman has great eye for colour and design, noting some of her different designs being more traditional like block pieced quilts, among other designs. Some are very different styles called paper piecing, where they are a little more modern.”
Some visitors to the show remarked, "Her quilting is truly an art form." "I look at her work and know what all she does in her busy life and it is a source of amazement for all that she accomplishes."
The gallery at the Kerrobert Courthouse location has been home to a number of local and provincial artists in a variety of presentations, showcasing talent as Kohlman's.
