KAMSACK — Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) is partnering with Yorkton Tribal Council, Keeseekoose, and Cote First Nations through the Invitational Shared Services Initiative (ISSI) to enhance Indigenous education through cultural involvement and foster reconciliation.
GSSD's board of education discussed the partnership at its meeting on April 25.
A formal Educational Partnership Plan has been established between Keeseekoose and two Kamsack schools, Victoria School and Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, aiming to create a more inclusive learning environment.
Throughout the year, GSSD has arranged various events and activities under these partnerships to foster cultural understanding within the schools, leading to more inclusive educational environments.
In the 2021-22 academic year, GSSD secured an ISSI grant with Cote First Nation, resulting in over $60,000 worth of land-based equipment to be shared among Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, Keeseekoose Chiefs Education Council, and Chief Gabriel Cote Education Centre. This grant further facilitated the hiring of a Community Liaison Worker and a Cultural Co-ordinator to support culturally relevant teachings and events.
