KAMSACK — Having released the list of book titles to be read over the next eight months, members of the Kamsack Book Club are eager to remind district residents that new members are welcome.
“We want to make more people aware that we exist and are open to new members,” Brenda Andrews, a member, said last week, adding that the current group of about eight people are meeting the last Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Kamsack Library.
The book club has been going for a long time, probably 20 to 25 years, if not more,” Andrews said.
The books selected by members to read over the next eight months can be ordered through the library, she said. At the meetings, which last from 90 minutes to two hours, the group discusses that month’s selection over coffee and snacks.
At each meeting, a different member leads the discussion, which is very informal.
Andrews said that the club members read all sorts of books, including history, fiction, non-fiction, short story collections, the classics and current novels, almost all kinds of titles except the lighter romance-type books.
The club encourages people to read a book they otherwise might not consider reading, she said.
The older books are probably easier to borrow from the library and members can use the App Libby with their library card to obtain an eBook or audio version, she said. The books can be ordered via the Parkland Library website at parklandlibrary.ca and one may order the books by oneself or may ask the librarian to do it.
Books ordered from the Kamsack Library can arrive from one week to four weeks after ordering, so Andrews recommends that those interested order their books as soon as possible.
If a person is not able to attend a meeting, attendance with the Internet’s Zoom feature is sometimes possible.

- Oct. 26, The Great Halifax Explosion by John Bacon;
- Nov. 30, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer;
- Jan. 25, Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain;
- Feb. 22, From the Ashes by Jessie thistle;
- March 29, Think Again by Adam Grant; April 26, Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks, and
- May 31, The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson.
