Pumpkin explosion

Two little pumpkin plants planted carefully in Mary Pasiechnik鈥檚 garden in Preeceville have taken on a life on their own. The two plants have grown to epic proportions and have now scaled the hedge and are creeping quickly to the street.

Two little pumpkin plants planted carefully in Mary Pasiechnik鈥檚 garden in Preeceville have taken on a life on their own. The two plants have grown to epic proportions and have now scaled the hedge and are creeping quickly to the street.

鈥淚 have never planted pumpkins and always thought of them as waste but when friends Chris and Kayla Balyski approached me about planting some in my garden I agreed,鈥 said Pasiechnik. 鈥淚 do share garden space with their mom Jackie Blotski so I thought what harm can two little pumpkins do. The young couple had just moved into a new home in Preeceville and did not have any garden space.

The pumpkins are the Atlantic Giant variety and are known for growing very large. There are a few pumpkins growing on the vines and there are some embedded in the hedge.

鈥淭he vines have just expanded to monstrous size and taken over the entire one side of my garden,鈥 laughed Pasiechnik.

The pumpkins are just in time for the 19th annual great pumpkin contest in Preeceville on September 12. The contest will also feature contests for the largest potato, cabbage, zucchini, onion, carrot, turnip and beet.
