Lukas Belbow of Edmonton, grandson of David and Christine Shabbits of Canora, won the bronze medal in automotive technology at the Skills Canada National Competition on May 29 to June 1 in Quebec City.

CANORA - “It’s exciting. When I found out, my hands went straight up in the air.”

That was how David Shabbits of Canora described his reaction to hearing the news from his wife Christine; their grandson Lukas Belbow had won third place in automotive technology at the Skills Canada National Competition held in Quebec City from May 29 to June 1.

Belbow, son of Christal Shabbits and Dean Belbow of Edmonton, is completing his Grade 11 studies at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Edmonton.

His road to nationals began on April 6 when he took part in automotive technology in a regional competition in Edmonton and won the gold medal. On May 8-9 he competed in provincials with a field of 18 competitors and once again won gold.

Next up was nationals in Quebec City, where Belbow was in tough with a field of 10 competitors, but captured third place. In total, over 500 students competed in 40 skill and trade technology competitions during the event.

Beblow is working toward completing his first-year apprenticeship in heavy duty mechanics at Allen’s Transport in Nisku, Alta.

Meanwhile, he is looking forward to improving on his result when the Skills Canada National Competition comes to Regina in 2025.
