CANORA - The U15 Highway 9 Predators hosted a six-team tournament in Canora on Nov. 4-5, and if these games are any indication, the team is going to provide local fans with highly competitive and exciting hockey over the coming season.
In addition to the Preds, the teams entered in the tournament were: Fort Knox, Tisdale, Humboldt, Langenburg and Yorkton Med Shoppe.
The Preds were placed in Pool A with Fort Knox and Tisdale, while the remaining three teams played in Pool B. Each team played the other teams in their pool once, which decided the participants in the A, B and C finals.
The Preds opened the tournament with highly competitive game against Fort Knox. The Preds were in a 2-0 hole in the third period, but kept battling back, Each team added a goal to make the score 3-1, before the Preds scored a second goal to cut the deficit to 3-2. A late chance just before the buzzer was denied, and the Preds suffered a one-goal loss.
In the second game, the Preds downed Tisdale 5-2 to set up a date with Yorkton in the B final. From all reports it was a hard-fought battle, but Yorkton came out with the victory.
The Humboldt Broncos were the winners of the A final, and the Langenburg Warriors came out on top in the C final.
The leading goal scorer in the tournament for the Preds was Gavin Erickson, with four goals. Shiloh Leson contributed a goal and three assists. Adding a goal and two assists each were Walker Wolkowski and Declan Friesen. Darian Serdachny found the back of the net once, and Seth Symak and Zaccarias Keshane each chipped in with an assist.
This season’s Highway 9 Predators roster is made up of players from Canora, Norquay, Stenen, Kamsack, Sturgis and Preeceville.
