CANORA - Not even a winter storm could stop an Easter tradition from going ahead.
On Good Friday, March 29, the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church hosted its second annual Way of the Cross Walk.
“The way of the cross is the walk our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ took on Good Friday on his way to Calvary,” said Lynda Statchuk, the organizer of the event. Calvary was the site just outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified.
The walk commemorated Jesus’ last day as a man. The procession stopped 14 times to mark the events of that day, beginning with Jesus’ condemnation and ending with Jesus being laid in the tomb. At each stop, a prayer was read. The process is known by Catholics as the Stations of the Cross.
Due to the weather, the walk was shortened. The group stuck to Third Street, first heading south to Eighth Avenue and then turning back north to First Avenue before returning to the church.
“Everyone was dressed warm and continued to sing and walk and sacrificing in the winter weather to remember what Christ did and sacrificed for all of us,” Statchuk said.
Due to the poor roads, only around 24 people joined in the event.
After the walk was over, everyone joined in the church basement for muffins and coffee.
