Maulers unable to pull out win against Regina in 18 AAA action

Plenty of fans made the trip north from Yorkton to support the Maulers during Canora's Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, but Regina skated away with a 5-2 victory.

CANORA - The U18 AAA Yorkton Maulers hosted the Regina Pat Canadians on Jan. 18 in Canora, in one of the featured games during Hockey Day in Saskatchewan.

Plenty of fans made the trip north from Yorkton to support the Maulers, but Regina skated away with a 5-2 victory.

The game received considerable attention both in Canora and across the province, as Maddox Schultz of the Pat Canadians, who joined the team as a 14-year-old with exceptional players status, was in action. Schultz did not disappoint, scoring twice and adding an assist in the victory.

Maulers Head Coach Jason Gordon said his team enjoys the challenge of facing the Pat Canadians.

“We love our matchup with them,” said Gordon. “They’re strong, and we were with them right to the end. We’re trying to compete with teams like that and elite players like Maddox Schultz, and learn from them.”

The last exceptional status player to play for the Maulers as a 14-year-old was Carson Dereniwsky of Canora, who is currently having an excellent rookie season with the Canora Cobras.

In addition to playing at Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, Coach Gordon and a number of Maulers were involved in the official announcement that Hockey Day was coming to Canora last fall.

“For us, our guys will remember forever being part of something bigger than the game. We were treaded first class both by Hockey Sask and by Canora.”

Gordon said the Maulers enjoy getting out to rural Parkland areas and promoting hockey.

“Absolutely, we love getting out to the smaller towns. We used to be the Parkland Maulers, and we like to attract Parkland region players to play with the Maulers.
