CANORA/STURGIS — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 42 calls from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26, some of which included: one 911 Act call, one administering a noxious substance, one assault, two assaulting a police officer, two breach of peace calls, three Child Welfare Act calls, one failure to remain at an accidents scene, one fraud, four Mental Health Act calls, four mischiefs, one theft of a truck, two traffic collisions, 15 traffic offenses, two uttering threats, and two wellbeing checks.
Assault conviction
On Sept. 24, 2020, a male was charged with aggravated assault after assaulting a woman outside a business on Main Street in Preeceville. On Jan. 24, 2023, the male was found guilty of aggravated assault in Yorkton Provincial Court and was sentenced to eight months in jail, 12 months of probation and a given a 10-year firearms prohibition.
Theft conviction
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP observed a stolen Mitsubishi Outlander driving in Canora on Aug. 24. Police started to follow the Outlander, which fled out of Canora westbound into the RM of Buchanan. The Outlander turned off into a field and got stuck in the mud. The male fled on foot and was arrested a short distance away. Police searched the vehicle and located a sawed-off shotgun. A 32-year-old male from Saskatoon was charged and remanded into custody for flight from police, dangerous driving, impaired driving, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of stolen property, and possession of methamphetamine. On Jan. 18, the male appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court and received a five-year jail sentence, four-year driving prohibition, and a lifetime firearms prohibition for his charges.
Vehicle egged
On Jan. 20, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report that a vehicle was egged in Canora. A suspect was identified by the complainant and police continue to investigate.
Danger at bar
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Jan. 22 to a complaint of a male who had been administered a noxious substance after attending a local bar. It is a criminal offence to administer a noxious substance. The Canora RCMP would like to remind the public to always be mindful and not leave your drink unattended. Police continue to investigate.
Sold rented washer/dryer
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were notified of a theft that occurred in Canora on Jan. 22. A tenant of a rental unit sold a washer and dryer that did not belong to them. Police continue to investigate.
Cell phone punishment
On Jan. 23, a woman and her son went to the Canora Detachment requesting police take her son’s cell phone away from him as he was being punished. Both the mother and son were spoken to about the issue and the son voluntarily gave the phone to his mom.
Angry female
The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched on Jan. 24 to an assault complaint in Canora. Police located the female suspect walking down the street. The female was very intoxicated and was arrested. During the arrest the suspect kicked both police officers and damaged the inside of a police vehicle. The female was taken to Yorkton Hospital by EMS with a police escort for a medical emergency. The female was charged and remanded into custody for assaulting the police officers, resisting arrest, mischief, assault, and failing to comply with release conditions.
Stolen vehicle
On Jan. 25, a vehicle was stolen in Canora and located in Swan River. RCMP are requesting the public assist the investigation with any information related to this case.
