CANORA, KAMSACK, PREECEVILLE — A proposed change to the provincial electoral boundaries would see Canora–Pelly expand to the west.
Every 10 years, a commission is tasked with redrawing the boundaries in an effort to keep their populations as equal as possible. The commission released an interim report with proposed changes on July 27.
The populations of Regina, Saskatoon, Warman and Martensville have grown more than the rest of the province. As a result, Warman and Martensville, which were in the same electoral district, would be placed into two separate districts under the proposal. Two rural-urban districts, Regina-Wascana Plains and Saskatoon-Stonebridge Dakota, would be become urban-only.
As a result, most rural constituencies, including Canora–Pelly, would grow in geographic size.
The proposed Canora-Pelly would expand to the west to include Hazel Dell, Lintlaw, Invermay, Sheho and Theodore. A chunk surrounding Yorkton will be removed and become part of the Yorkton electoral district.
There would be 14,102 people in the proposed Canora-Pelly. The current version has 12,770 people.
Saskatchewan residents still have a chance to give input to the proposal. There will be eight hearings, including one in Yorkton at the Holiday Inn Express on Thursday, Sept. 15. There will also be a virtual hearing on Friday, Sept. 15. An application to present to the commission, which must be filled out no later than 15 days before the meeting, can be .
