Canora student/athletes run their best times at provincials

After finding success during the east central district season, CCS runners peaked at the right time with all seven achieving personal best results at provincials.

CANORA - A total of seven runners from Canora Composite School qualified for cross-country provincials in intermediate, junior and senior events, which were held in Regina on Oct. 14.

It turned out to be a great day for running, according to coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen.

“The weather was a little cool, but once the runners got going they didn't notice it,” reported the coaches. “In fact, it may have been a huge benefit to our runners because it made them run faster.”

The coaches said they couldn’t have asked for anything more from the runners.

“Each one had a personal best time for their races, which as coaches, is exactly what we want to happen when attending a provincial competition. We want our runners to peak at the most important moment!”

Kaelyn Shukin ran a personal best time of 13:33 in the Intermediate Girls 3km race to finish 35th out of 93 runners, while Danielle Dutchak finished 90th in 16:59, also a personal best.

Canora sent four runners to provincials in the Junior Boys 4km event, with each achieving a personal best time in a field of 96 runners. Ty Lemaigre clocked a time of 16:24 to finish 54th, while Andrew Sliva was not far behind with a time of 16:45, good for 66th. Pierre Rollin and Henry Craig actually crossed the finish line with the same time of 17:24. Rollin was awarded 75th place and Craig, 76th.

Jack Craig was the sole Canora competitor in the Senior Boys 5km run in a field of 107 runners, and finished 94h in a personal best time of 22:19.

Coaches Lowes and Kitchen said they are, “as coaches, and as a CCS School Community, very proud of each of these runners for representing Canora Composite School and East Central District in a very positive way. We can't wait to see everyone next season!”
