Canora RCMP: Intoxicated driver arrested, small child in vehicle

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 29 calls from Feb. 6 to Feb.

CANORA —  The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 29 calls from Feb. 6 to Feb. 12, some of which included:

  • four 911 Act calls,
  • one assault,
  • two assisting Canadian Police Agency,
  • one break and enter,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • one impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
  • three failures to comply with release order,
  • two harassing communications,
  • two Mental Health Act calls,
  • one offender management,
  • one suspicious person,
  • two thefts under $5,000,
  • one traffic collision,
  • three traffic offenses and
  • one suspicious person. 

911 not a transport service

On Feb. 6, a man called 911 requesting police drive his adult son to court. The caller was told that police do not provide this type of service. The Canora RCMP would like to remind the public that 911 should not be called for a non-emergency or another reason that is not intended for emergency services.

Irresponsible parents

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP there dispatched on Feb. 8 to a report of an erratic driver hitting the ditch on Highway 9 north of Canora. Police attended the scene and located the vehicle. An intoxicated man and woman were sitting in the front seats and a three-year-old child not properly restrained in the back seat.

The man was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and refused to provide breath samples to police.

A 37-year-old man from Norquay has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, failure or refusal to comply with demand, abandoning a child (child endangerment), failure to comply with probation order, driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver licence and driving a vehicle with an unrestrained passenger under 16 years old.

The child was not injured and Yorkton Child and Family Services assisted with ensuring the safety of the child.

Unusual shoplifter

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a weapon call at a business in Canora on Feb. 8.  The caller reported an intoxicated man entered the business and was observed with an object resembling a pistol in his jacket. The man proceeded to shoplift liquor and left the store. The man later returned in an attempt to get cigarettes. When he was refused service, he started to do jumping jacks. The man is known to police and the investigation is ongoing.

Break and enter at laundromat

On Feb. 9, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP investigated a break and enter to the Canora Laundromat. A Caucasian man and woman broke into the business and stole items. The suspects were driving an older Chevy truck. If you recognize the truck in the photos, pleas contact the RCMP.
