CANORA - In a week featuring everything from the official grand opening of the new Canora Aquatic Park to the 50th anniversary of the Canora Keen Age Centre and much more, Canora in Bloom was “a nice full week of activities” according to Brandi Zavislak, a member of the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee, and community development officer.
The community-wide garage sale on July 15-16 “was a huge success” according to many who participated in hosting the sales.
“All weekend there was so much traffic in town and lots of buzz in our bustling little community,” said Zavislak.
A community outdoor church service was held outside the Town of Canora office on July 16.
“The non-denomination church service was a great success thanks to the organizing of Brett Watson who is so dedicated to hosting this harmonious community event,” said Zavislak.
After the service, the Hole-In-One Golf Tournament was held, “providing a full day of fun along with great food and refreshments.”
On July 17, the Keen Age Centre hosted its 50th Anniversary Celebration in an enjoyable and well-attended event, according to organizers.
The Perogy Lunch is one of the most popular annual events during Canora in Bloom, and was once again hosted by the St. Andrews United Church.
“The ladies at the United Church, as always, made a fabulous meal and attendance was steady considering it was raining during the event,” said Zavislak. “This event continues to be a community favorite during CIB.
“The Saskatchewan Science Outreach Program at the Canora Parkland Library had an excellent outcome and was very well attended. We are lucky that Deb Leson organized this great event for the town of Canora.”
A new event for Canora in Bloom this year was the Quilt Show hosted by A Common Thread at St. Andrews United Church on July 19.
“The Quilt Show was absolutely incredible,” marveled Zavislak. “What a talented group of quilters, a really great display of handcrafted masterpieces.”
The Quilt Show was followed by the Canora Aquatic Park Grand Opening, a true success story for the Town of Canora.
The Picnic in The Park on July 20 was well-attended, with musical entertainment provided by The Zayshley’s, Patty and Randy.
“The Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee decided to bring this event back to Canora in Bloom as we heard a lot of feedback that this event was really missed in recent years,” said Zavislak. “Historically the Lioness’ hosted this wonderful event for many years. So the Tourism Fundraising Committee thought now was the time to bring this tradition back and bring our community together. We had numerous compliments on how great the beef-on-a-bun was and the entertainment was exceptional as always, The Zayshely's are a fan favourite among all ages in Canora.”
The week-long Canora in Bloom closed with Bloom Fest on July 21. The day started out extremely busy with over 50 vendors “and the beer gardens were bustling,” reported Zavislak.
“The sun was shining and the mushroom burgers were selling. Then the storm came in and literally, we had to make sure everyone was safe and we allowed numerous event attendees inside our museum until the storm subsided. We had to shut everything down due to the inclement weather. Until then, everything was going really well.”
Zavislak said the success of Canora in Bloom can be attributed to a community-wide effort.
“I would like to thank all of the community groups involved for participating in our week-long festivities. Canora in Bloom is made possible by all of the volunteers who work hard to make all of these events happen.”
Each of the community groups keeps the funds raised from the events they hosted during the CIB week.
Zavislak reminds Canora and area residents that the next community event, Live & Play Street Festival is just around the corner on Aug. 19.
