CANORA- Canora and area residents have the opportunity to get involved in one more big summer celebration.
Streetfest & Party in the Park is set for downtown Main Street and King George Park on Saturday, Aug. 17.
“You want to come early to get good food, great entertainment and more, all hosted by the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee,” said Brandi Zavislak, committee member and community development officer.
The day begins bright and early with the Canora Fire Department Sausage and Pancake Breakfast. If that’s too early for you but you still plan on bringing your appetite, the Canora Golf & Country Club concession will make sure you’re well fed later in the day.
Live music will be the centre of attention on the new outdoor stage at King George Park, including the Zayshley Band at Noon, followed by the Jackie Guy Band.
If you’re more interested in classic vehicles, how about a visit to the Car Show? You can expect to see an eye-popping lineup of cars, trucks and motorbikes, some dating back 70 or 80 years ago, right up to the latest models from the 21st century.
For those too young to be obsessed with cars, yet still with plenty of energy to burn off, there is all kinds of fun to be had at the petting zoo, as well as the bouncy castles.
Adults that don’t have quite as much energy as the youngsters can relax at the beer gardens, or stroll through the farmers market in that never-ending search for unexpected treasures.
Zavislak said the Streetfest & Party in the Park truly has something for everyone, and you can’t beat the price to get in.
“Admission is free,” she said. “It’s a very special event held just before the harvest gets really busy to mark the end of the summer season in Canora. It brings the community together, brings tourism to Canora and engages the business community.”
Zavislak said, after last year’s freak storm during Streetfest, the committee decided to have more activities in the park this year, starting with the new outdoor stage.
“The 2024 CCS Graduates were the first to use the new stage, and it’s been used well since then,” she said. “It’s rented out at $150 per use, with proceeds going back to the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee for further community improvements.
“We are fundraising, that’s the key, have been doing it for several years, it’s phenomenal. It draws big crowds, and is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
“Members of the Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee take time out of their days to help host fun events for Canora.”
The success of Streetfest has created valuable opportunities for local community groups.
“We give them the chance to fund raise at our events, where they get massive exposure,” said Zavislak.
Local groups who have benefitted from exposure to fundraising opportunities at Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee events earlier this summer include the Canora branch of the Royal Canadian, Legion, Rainbow Hall, and the 13U Canora Reds baseball team for their trip to provincials.
“We get so many compliments from people from other areas, they’re astounded by how many events we host,” concluded Zavislak.
