CANORA - There was an air of youthful anticipation in the air as Grade 1 and 2 students from Canora Junior Elementary school were toured around the banners displayed on Canora streets on Nov. 8 by Brandi Zavislak, community development officer.
Zavislak, who said she enjoys given tours of the banners and other interesting Canora features to school and community groups, helped the students get to know a bit about the veterans honoured in each banner. The banners bring to mind veterans from Canora and area who served, as well as those from further away who still have family in the Canora area.
Teachers Jennifer Prychak, Grade 1, and Lisa Fast, Grade two, said they were grateful to have access to this valuable educational opportunity provided by Zavislak.
“Teachers are always searching for ways to connect our curriculum to real-life experiences. We have things in our community that we can use to help students understand difficult concepts. We took our students to the Legion, Cenotaph and the Banners displayed along our streets to make Remembrance Day more meaningful to them. Our students came back with many observations and connections that they will use to build on their knowledge in the future.
