Awards Night celebrates excellence of Canora students

Achievements in academics, sports and other extra-curricular activities were recognized at the annual Canora Composite School annual awards night

CANORA - Canora Composite School hosted its annual awards night on June 12 in recognition of achievement in academics, sports and other extra-curricular activities.

Zoe Thomas was the winner of the Governor General Award for the 2022/23 school year, presented by Good Spirit School Division trustee Shannon Leson.

Grade 5-9 academics

Certificates of merit and academic proficiency awards were presented to Grades 5-9 students. Grade 5A winners were Taylor Effa and Isabelle Kondratoff, while Grade 5B awards went to Skyler Brass and Drew Kitchen. Jaeden Martin was the winner of the Grade 5 most improved award.

In Grade 6A, Angel Sliva and Ethan Chabun took home the awards. Haley Kraynick and Karter Shukin were the winners in 6B, while Camryn Burym was the most improved.

Tessa Prychak and Claire Ruf were the winners for Grade 7A, and 7B awards went to Lilith Shewchuk-Gilson and Colby Fast. The most improved award went to Wade Vangen.

Winners in Grade 8A were Olivia Tratch and Zoe Becker, with Jacob Rewakowsky and Isabelle Chabun earning the awards for 8B. Most improved for Grade 8 was Victoria Zbitniff.

Jacob Lowes and Luca Propp were the Grade 9A academic award winners. The honours for Grade 9B went to Breanna Ramos and Natalie Kosar. Jose Mirva earned the most improved award.

Peewee extra-curricular

Angel Sliva was the winner of the peewee cross-country award.

Peewee volleyball awards went to Kenzee Kopelchuk (girls) and Seth Propp (boys). Presley Owchar (girls) and Hudson Matychuk (boys) won the peewee basketball awards.

Drew Kitchen was the winner of the peewee track-and-field award, while Roman Zaika earned the peewee award for NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program).

Peewee badminton awards went to Courtlyn Heshka (girls) and Isaac Bryant (boys).

Junior extra-curricular

Kaelyn Shukin was the winner of the junior cross-country award.

For junior girls volleyball; Claire Ruf was rookie of the year, Josie Mirva won the spirit award and Paisley Wolkowski earned the MVP.

In junior boys volleyball, Kasen Heshka was named the rookie of the year, Shiloh Leson won the spirit award and MVP honours went to Liam Trask.

Junior girls basketball awards went to: Tobbi Effa (rookie of the year), Olivia Tratch (spirit) and Merrick Derkatch (MVP).

In junior boys basketball, the winners were: Jacob Rewakowsky (rookie of the year), Jackson Palagian (spirit) and Liam Trask (MVP).

Isabelle Chabun was the winner of the junior track-and-field award.

Awards for junior badminton went to Paisley Wolkowski and Maddy Dutchak.

Owen Ostafie took home the junior curling award and Natalie Kosar earned the junior NASP award.

Paisley Wolkowski was the winner of the junior female athlete of the year award, while Liam Trask took the honours as junior male athlete of the year.

Senior extra-curricular

For the second year in a row, Jack Craig won the senior cross-country award, and also earned the NASP award.

In senior girls volleyball; the top rooking was Katherine Hauber, the spirit award went to Makayla Heshka and Shayna Leson won the MVP.

Jace Wolos was named rookie of the year in senior boys basketball. Porter Wolkowski won the spirit award and Nate Wolos earned the MVP.

The senior girls basketball rookie of the year was Katherine Hauber. The spirit award went to Callie Sznerch. The MVP award was shared by Jordan Harper and Shayna Leson.

The senior boys basketball rookie of the year award was won by Andrew Owchar, with Josh Rock taking home the spirt award. Matthew Makowsky won the MVP.

Taye Shukin was the winner of the senior track-and-field award, and Briel Beblow earned the award for senior golf.

Nate Wolos won for senior badminton and Jordan Zbitniff was named the top senior curler.

Shayna Leson won the female athlete of the year award.

Porter Wolkowski was the winner of the male athlete of the year award.

Grade 10-12 academics

The Grade 10 award winners were: Meekah Unick (first), Andrew Owchar and Brenna Reine (second), Jada Nordin (third) and Gracie Hamm (most improved).

In Grade 11, the award winners were: Delilah Wilson (first), Gleb Zhupinas (second), Ty Sleeva (third) and Chloe Pshyk (most improved).

For Grade 12, the winners were: Michael Owchar (first), Callie Sznerch (second), Nate Wolos (third) and Ty Baillie (most improved).

Level 30 class awards went to:

Michael Owchar – Physics 30, English 30B, Pre-Calculus 30, Workplace and Apprenticeship 30

Callie Sznerch – Biology 30, Chemistry 30

Nate Wolos – Calculus 30, English 30A (tie)

Jack Craig – English 30A (tie)

Connor Kraynick - Foundations of Math 30

Brandon Harder – History 30

Porter Wolkowski - Phys-Ed 30

Ty Baillie – Construction 30

Owen Borson – Welding 30

Bronson Heshka – CAD 30

Brayden Goetzinger – Communications Media 30

Hunter Secondiak – Art 30

Crossroads awards

Presented by Jeff Bisschop, the winners of the Crossroads Credit Union Student Recognition Awards were: Jayden Dergousoff (Grade 5), Chance Weinbender (Grade 6), Ashton Strelioff (Grade 7), William Sliva (Grade 8), Josie Mirva (Grade 9), Miah Ruf (Grade 10), Noah Prychak (Grade 11) and Josh Rock (Grade 12).
