Learning about pizza

Grade 4 classes from Saltcoats, Dr. Brass, Churchbridge, St. Paul’s, St. Mary’s, Invermay and Canora schools were in Yorkton this past Tuesday and Wednesday to help harvest the Pizza Farm.  This past June these students helped to plant the Pizza Farm as part of an educational program aimed at teaching kids about where their food comes from and how Agriculture feeds the world.

There are nine such Food Farms in the province modelled after the Pizza Farm that was started in Yorkton four years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agriculture in the Classroom.

The fall Harvest sessions included stations that featured a dairy calf, pigs, wheat and canola, tomatoes & peppers, and a combine. All of which are involved in producing the ingredients needed to make pizza.

The Pizza Farm program follows up the harvest by conducting in-classroom pizza making session where students get to use some of the ingredients they harvested to make their very own pizza.

The Food Farm Program has enjoyed overwhelming success and positive feedback from students and teachers in that it creates valuable connections to grades 3 & 4 curriculum as well as creating a real awareness of the important role that Agriculture plays in producing the food we eat. It’s an exciting and engaging venue to take students on a journey from Farm to Fork.
