YORKTON - The East Central Saskatchewan Angus Pasture Tour was the place to be this week for those in the cattle business, especially for those having a particular interest in Angus cattle.
The provincial Angus association typically has a tour each year, and this year it was held in the east central region.
Over two days – Aug. 9 and 10 – the tour was scheduled to make stops at nine purebred Angus farms. Day one the tour headed basically north, and day two would swing south of Yorkton.
The tour would visit Parkwood Farms, PK Angus, HS Angus, Dual E Cattle Co., Double C Red Angus, Crescent Creek Angus, Triple H Red Angus, 4K Angus, Black Ridge Angus and Nu-Horizon Angus.
Parkwood Farms northeast of Yorkton was the first stop.
The Burkell family has farmed since 1903, with Angus herd started by Amos Burkell, and maintained through the years by William, Jack, Scott and now a fifth generation becoming involved.
The operation runs some 170 cows, and a small feedlot. They regularly sell bulls through the annual Blue Collar Sale, and heifers through Harvest Showdown in Yorkton.
In addition, other breeders had some show stock on display at the various farm stops including PK Angus with a selection of Red Angus at the first stop Wednesday.
The first day will wind-up at Tuffnell Hall for a traditional Ukrainian supper and entertainment by Quick Dick McDick.
The second day will wind-up at the Dysart Hall where a ‘Verified Angus BBQ Competition’ will provide the food. Six Angus producers will be teamed with one of six acclaimed BBQ pit-masters in a competition to promote Angus beef.
