REGINA - Team Sask has touched down at home after a successful two weeks in Prince Edward Island at the 2023 Canada Winter Games.
The following is just some of the many highlights from the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI. It was a Games that saw Saskatchewan surpass the 17 medals won at the Red Deer 2019 Winter Games. Records were broken, medals were won, and a great time was had.
TEAM SASKATCHEWAN HIGHLIGHTS:
LONG TRACK SPEED SKATERS

Luca Veeman, Saskatchewan’s Opening Ceremony flag bearer led the way with five total medals. He capped his great opening week by claiming gold in the mass start, his final event.

Bon Lowe earned a silver medal in the 5000m in a dazzling performance, while the men’s team had a photo-finish in the team pursuit, earning silver.

Serena Dallaire, of Saskatoon, had a great Games, picking up a pair of bronze medals.
HISTORY FOR GYMNASTICS

Rylee Miller of Saskatoon made history by becoming the most decorated female Saskatchewan gymnast in Canada Games history.

Saskatchewan also earned a pair of silver medals in men’s and women’s synchronized trampoline. Halle Pipko and Jami Reschke took silver in the female event while Wilson Reimche and Connor Wehage earned silver on the men’s side.

Saskatchewan’s first gold medal of the Games came on the pommel horse when Jordan Carroll picked up Team Sask’s first ever gold in the event.
RINGETTE

It was full of drama as Team Saskatchewan beat the hosts from PEI in overtime to claim bronze. It was a medal 24 years in the making.
HOCKEY

Team Sask captured the attention of the province, and the country, while in PEI. The boys were the only team to go undefeated as they made their way to the gold medal game vs Ontario. The Eastlink Centre was sold out and Ontario won a thriller in double-overtime.

It was Saskatchewan’s first time in the gold medal game since winning it in 1995.
MIXED DOUBLES CURLING HISTORY

Saskatchewan made history in week two. Mixed Doubles Curling made its debut at the games and Saskatchewan’s pair was part of the first-ever draw and picked up the first-ever win.
JUDO

Saskatchewan saw success on the mat in week two as Judo picked up a pair of medals.
LITERACY DONATION PROGRAM

Saskatchewan took part in the Games’ charity initiative. Chef de Mission Mark Bracken, along with a pair of athletes from the female hockey team took part in the event.
SHEWCHUK GOES OUT WITH THE FLAG

PEI 2023 was Krystle Shewchuk’s fourth, and final, Canada Games. After picking up her fifth-career Canada Games’ medal, Shewchuk was chosen to carry the flag in the Closing Ceremony.
